This particular style of explosion box is a 3 layer box. Layer #3 folded up to reveal layer #2.

4 pieces of coordinating cardstock
variety of coordinating pattern paper
variety of coordinating embellishments
Paper cutter
Paper scoring tool
Adhesive
4 photos 3 5/8 x 3 5/8 for the first layer
4 photos 3 1/4 x 3 5/8 for the second layer
4 photos 2 3/4 x 3 5/8 for the last layer
1 photo 2 3/4 x 2 3/4 for the center
DIRECTIONS:
1. Use a 12x12 cardstock and score 4" from each side giving you 9 4x4 scored squares.
Cut 4" down on the scored line on the right, rotate 90 degrees and repeat, do this until you have a 4" cut on the top right corner of each side
2. Pre-cut paper to 11 1/2 by 11 1/2 and score 4" from each side.
Cut and remove the 4 corners.
3. Pre-cut cardstock to 11x11 and score 4" from each side.
Cut and remove the 4 corners.
For the lid you would cut the cardstock to 8 1/8 x 8 1/8 and score 2" all around. Score corners and fold in triangles glue together and voila!
For assembly you simply take layer #2 and put it on top of layer #1. You're only going to glue the center of #2 to #1. Next you take layer #3 and put it on top of layer #2 and only glue the center of #2 on to #3. Layer #3 is going to be the layer that has the 2 3/4 x 2 3/4 picture in the center.
Decorate each layer the way you would decorate the matting on a scrapbook page. Try to coordinate the paper with the cardstock and your photos. I used a Level 2 Paper Pack from Close to my Heart called Silhouette and then printed the photos in Sepia.
